Yet while all those outfits and mannerisms and lyrics and minutia unspooled from a singular genius mind, Bowie’s lengthy and storied career is but a brilliantly effective sieve. The chameleonic singer-songwriter crafted memorable personas with iconic monikers, holistically reinventing himself again and again in ways that ultimately warranted a touring museum exhibition that has lasted some five years. All artists great and small benefit from influences, however obscure or indirect, whether via predecessor or contemporary or progeny. Long story short, the cowboy country look doesn’t suit Scott Walker.David Bowie didn’t just come from outta nowhere, a starman-cum-showman already fully formed and ready to dazzle. Unfortunately, the songs on the record are mediocre and middle-of-the-road, not to mention four of the ten songs weren’t even his, they were written by Billy Joe Shaver and had previously appeared on Waylon Jenning’s 1973 Honky Tonk Heroes, who did the whole ‘outlaw country artist’ a little more authentically and more successfully. ![]() His excuse at the time was to “return to his roots”. Released in 1974, during the period of time I would venture to call his ‘lost years’, he was essentially owned by the record label and was contractually obligated to release material. Scott Walker’s tenth album and is his final solo record released right before taking a decade long hiatus.
